SPEAKER_02

This is Sergio says it straight. Straight talk. Real people, no filter. Say it straight or don't say it at all. What's up, everyone? Welcome to another episode. Thank you to all the listeners and supporters for tuning in. My guest today is Jeremy Garber, community coach. Overall, just a great guy to hang out with, a good friend. So we're going to spend a little time with Jeremy. We're going to talk a little bit about coaching. We're going to talk about just things in general that are happening in his life. And then focus a little bit on community. How does that sound, Jeremy?

SPEAKER_00

That sounds amazing. Let's get it started.

SPEAKER_02

All right. So first and foremost, thanks a lot for coming in. I know you're a very, very busy guy because I know I've been around you with all the coaching and just your kids. I know your kids are very involved in sports too. Your involvement with the uh Orchid Youth Softball Association. I know season just ended, but I think you're still involved in some aspect of it right now, correct? Always is a great hobby, man. I know. And I had the privilege to be on your coaching staff last year. So that was a great experience, by the way. I really enjoyed it. Me too. My daughter got to play on your team. And I gotta tell you, man, uh, that was one of the best times that we've had actually in you know, playing softball, my daughter playing softball and me being involved as a coach. So my hat's off to you. You you you do it uh you do it a certain way, you bring a certain flavor to coaching. I gotta say that you bring a certain flavor to coaching. So uh, and a lot of people would say that too. If you were to ask people, hey Coach Jeremy, oh yeah, man, I I would love for my daughter to play for Coach Jeremy. I heard it countless times out there while on the ball field, while in these different events, these uh fundraisers, whatever you want to call that we did. Uh nothing but good things said about you. So, like I said, one of the reasons I wanted to bring you out here uh and and just kind of you know talk a little bit, have a little fun here. You know what I'm saying? Chop it up a little bit, right? Yeah, yeah. So thanks again. Um, real quick, what were you listening to listening to on the way in here? What what what you have on the on the radio or uh or on on your system?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, my boy had on some J. Cole. So okay. So when I jumped back in my truck, that was on my playlist. Is that does that get you hyped up? Oh, it just gets me going. I love whatever's on there. I'm a mixture of everything.

SPEAKER_02

All right, and I'm the same way too, man. I'm like a chameleon, man. I can do country, I can do hip hop, I can do reggae. I do it all too.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah, throw some scott on there. Let's go.

SPEAKER_02

And I just gotta say one thing about Coach Jeremy. I said Coach Jeremy because that's where we met. We met on the ball field. But Coach Jeremy, he keeps the practices live. I gotta tell you, with the music, the atmosphere. And this is one thing about Coach Jeremy. He says he doesn't yell, he projects. Yep, so he's not yelling at the players, he's projecting because he wants to get his point across. And I found that to be awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Actually, yeah, well, there's a there's a thought process behind that. I was taught when I was young is when a coach is raising his voice, it's not raising it at you, it's raising it out. Your voice is being broadcasted in a way to where there's other kids that have the same question, or there might be a kid that will backed up position up. Right. They're gonna need to know the same thing because they just witnessed what we all witnessed, right? So that's why we project. We gotta make sure everybody understands. Now, ball players at some point, you know, yeah, as a coach, you you know, they'll take it personal. That's why I let them all know. I'm not yelling, I'm projecting. Project.

SPEAKER_02

I'm projecting my wife. She loved that too. She's like, damn, he's projecting, but he's you know what I'm saying? He's he's he's getting his point of cry. That was awesome. Uh, and my daughter, Alyssa. Um, you know her. She was she was kind of quiet. She she wasn't one to be yelling out there and and getting things you know communicated in the proper way, but you got her to be loud out there. Yeah, I did. So before that, man, she was just out there doing her thing.

SPEAKER_00

Man, you have a you have a very talented dollar, man. I appreciate it, man. She went out there. By the end of the season, she's diving for fly balls, dude. She was she was rocking.

SPEAKER_02

That was all you, brother. That was all you.

SPEAKER_00

That was all of us, man. Don't don't take your don't don't short yourself up.

SPEAKER_02

And uh a quick shout out to Coach Tim. Tim Clark. Yeah, another one uh uh on the coaching staff. Great dude, very, very knowledgeable guy, a good guy to have around, definitely for sure on your team.

SPEAKER_00

Definitely a pillar.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, for sure. Um, real quick, let's get let's get kind of going here on uh a little bit about you, Jeremy. All right, since this is about you, okay. Uh, where'd you grow up? Like, tell us a little bit about where you came from.

SPEAKER_00

Whoo, all right. Well, um, I went from the woods to the hood.

SPEAKER_02

The woods to the hood.

SPEAKER_00

And then to the birds.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. When you're talking woods, what do you mean by woods?

SPEAKER_00

So without getting into crazy details, you know, parents. You can get into whatever you want to get into. Parents have their stuff, you know, and they separate, and yeah, when you're younger, you don't really get to choose where you go. Right. Oh, you know, my mama, I was the youngest, I was a baby. She brought me, my uh my older brother, he stayed with my dad in Massachusetts. I was born in Boston.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_00

And then uh when my mother left, she went to Washington State and uh became kind of like a lumberjack.

SPEAKER_02

A lumberjack.

SPEAKER_00

They were called the Shake Rats.

SPEAKER_02

No way, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Real s there's real stuff. Oh damn. So before this casino was built in uh Snow Qualmy, I think it was, we stayed in this uh small town North Bend, and we were actually not in North Bend at first. We were actually um like three or four miles deep into the woods. Okay, and I just remember, you know, they'd helicopter in on a piece of plywood, bro. No. And I'd be back at the base camp and they would just cut their way uh path all the way back to the base camp, dude.

SPEAKER_01

Oh wow.

SPEAKER_00

I I dude, I used growing up I was hunting bullfrogs and log lakes, uh running around with the tiny. That sounds like a good time, bro. It got cold.

SPEAKER_02

I know, but I like I I spent some time in Colorado and I know the snow out there. Yeah, it gets cold, but it's probably a little bit different, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's wet cold.

SPEAKER_02

Wet cold, okay.

SPEAKER_00

It comes down a little bit heavier, okay. But um I loved it. It was great. And then um, you know, mom had some hard times. Uh decided to come back to where my parent my grandparents lived in Santa Barbara.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And Montecito. Stay there for just a couple months, and then uh my mom saved up enough cash to get a spot in Lompoc.

SPEAKER_02

Lompoc. Lompoc.

SPEAKER_00

Lompada. I grew up in Lompok, uh Lompo, California. Love you, love you, nothing but the big L. Um grew up on 4th Street, you know, hung around with 4th Street in Guadalupe, Treasure Park.

SPEAKER_02

So I'm a fourth streeter.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I was uh 420 4th Street, apartment number two. Oh day, all right. Yeah, but uh grew up on 4th Street for the rest until about 17 when I moved back east to where my dad was. He had some things going on out there, and uh I had to get kind of my head straight, you know. Yeah. Sometimes when you're in a small town, you know, run a body, you run a bug. Oh, of course, man.

SPEAKER_02

So there's nothing else to do.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So uh went out back east and uh changed out my life. My dad changed my life.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, really? So he was a big influence, I'm assuming. Yeah, big time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, same, you know, my whole family. I can't say just my family. Right, right. My whole family. And then um helped him out out back east, and he helped me, and then gave me some good you know guidelines on manhood.

SPEAKER_02

Of course.

SPEAKER_00

And then uh came back and just did whatever I had to do to survive, just like every other competition. You know, you do what you gotta do. I'll work three jobs, pizza parlor, I mean chocolatier, taco bell. It didn't matter at that age, dude. I what was your favorite though? Of those places you just taco belly Taco Bell. Okay, that was my absolute favorite. That's a go-to, huh? I was there when they invented the chulupa, bro. For real? For real. No, yeah. It took me a while to realize I meant canoe, but it makes sense. Yeah, it is. That means canoe, yeah, in Spanish. But uh, yeah, dude, uh Taco Bell was a jam for me back then. You know, as a kid, you're just you know, free food, bro. Free food, they they give you lunch.

SPEAKER_02

So back when it was like what 39 Saint Tacos, 29 St. Taco. I don't know, man. I miss those days.

SPEAKER_00

But um, yeah, then uh man, just life flows, dude. You know, life flows.

SPEAKER_02

It does. Life, like you you blink, and next thing you know, you're married, kids. You know, and they're graduating high school. And I know you got you got one gonna be graduating here in a few days, right?

SPEAKER_00

Your son Friday. He graduated my son Hunter. Uh he graduates on Friday. Congratulations to Hunter. Lots of honors. Uh he got a scholarship going to ASU.

SPEAKER_02

Football, right? No, no, all brain, bro. This is academics.

SPEAKER_00

Yo, check this out. That's awesome, brother. I'm so blessed, bro. I'm so blessed. My boy got a scholarship based off of his noggin, dude. That is freaking awesome, brother. Study habits matter.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, I I thought it would for some reason I thought it was for a football scholarship.

SPEAKER_00

No, he's gonna try out. I mean, yeah, that's just who he is. He's always gonna be involved with sports, but no, he actually got there straight on his brain, man.

SPEAKER_02

Uh he was an all-star, right?

SPEAKER_00

Or yeah, he just finished up the FCA all-stars, but I mean, in the end, his his brain, his brain's what got him there. So he's going in uh for electrical and civil engineering.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, he's gonna get a good job when he graduates.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely, but he's still dedicated. Man, this kid is still gonna be going, he got uh the dates for the tryouts, he's gonna be going to the tryouts doing his thing.

SPEAKER_02

That'd be I mean, you never know, right? Hey, God is good, you never know.

SPEAKER_00

I watched this kid accomplish everything, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And and I got a I got the opportunity to meet your your son on a couple of occasions. Yeah, actually, want to make a quick note here. Jeremy throws some of the best parties, by the way.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, I do. So no joke. He does if you're invited to a Garber party, roll up.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Roll up.

SPEAKER_02

He knows how he knows how to host, by the way. We have fun, we have a great time.

SPEAKER_00

We have fun.

SPEAKER_02

And uh, so going back to your son, I had a chance to meet him on two occasions, two of your parties. Man, what what you I'm just gonna say, you raised him well. Thank you. Very proper, very, very educated, very well mannered. Thank you. So I gotta tell you, give you hats off to you, brother. Bro, for that. I know you gotta be so proud of him right now.

SPEAKER_00

Honestly, uh, props to the wife. Yeah, I mean I'm me too, but yeah, props to wife. She got him into God early.

SPEAKER_02

That's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Same with my daughter, same with my daughter. They both got into the word of God early. That's good, you know, and uh that just built their structure, and then I focused a lot on integrity. That's good, and uh just being accountable, and that's it.

SPEAKER_02

And that's why you're one of the good guys, brother.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, that's what that's what I learned that people become successful in life. Exactly it, they hold themselves accountable, they have integrity, and and they rise, bro.

SPEAKER_02

Of course, and uh also had the privilege to be around your daughter while we were coaching together. She she was fun to be around, yeah. A little mini coach.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's my little sweep right there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and uh she just brought that energy, man. Whenever we needed a little spark, get the girls moving. She was always there to make that happen.

SPEAKER_00

A little hype girl, right there. Yeah, and she'll ball out with the best of them. She's not afraid for a little miniature girl. She, you know, she says she's 5'4, she's now five four. So nah, she's five three and three-quarters.

SPEAKER_02

But yeah, um, I I do appreciate the time that she spent, like I said, with our girls out there. Um, she was like a little mentor.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, talking to these girls when they were down on themselves. She would go over there, give them a little pep talk, whatever it is. Because you know, sometimes as coaches, we try to give them that little talk, but it doesn't always work. Sometimes, like, you need somebody that's on their level to go ahead and get them back up. Yep. Strategy, bro. Exactly. Strategy, bro. Strategy. Yep. Um, and then uh remind me, where where were we for the uh state? Where were where did we go? Do you remember where it was?

SPEAKER_00

Oh goodness, it was um far down. It was in Laguna. Laguna, no, where were we?

SPEAKER_02

I know we were we that tired, man.

SPEAKER_00

We were tired out non-stop, but I know we played from uh we played teams from El Rio, yeah, all the way down from San Diego. I mean, we played a lot, and that was competition.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, those girls out there in in from the south side, LA, orange, those girls they're they they come to play, man.

SPEAKER_00

You know, um our girls learned something. They did. Our girls learned that they can contend because if you remember, we were in every single game. We were we were in every single game. The only difference was capitalizing off of mistakes.

SPEAKER_02

That's that's what killed us.

SPEAKER_00

That's what that's all it was, you know. And there's a lot of competition down there, and a lot of teams that are built and they they're raised from you know young level teams, right? And they go all the way up to the higher level, you know, 14, yeah, 16, you know, high school. Right. They've played together their whole time. Yeah. Unfortunately for us, you know, we're kind of thinned out here.

SPEAKER_02

Do you and uh how much of it or does it have to do a lot with travel ball, you think?

SPEAKER_00

Oh oh ah man. Not to give travel ball a bad name right there. But certain travel ball teams can do that for themselves. Right. They can give themselves a bad name. Yeah. I've uh you know, I've seen you've seen it too throughout the years. Uh baseball, softball. It doesn't matter. It does yeah, there's it doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_02

It doesn't matter what sport it is, soccer or whatever. Soccer, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um there's certain coaches that jump into the travel ball game and bring a whole bunch of talent with them just because they got upset they didn't get an all-star team.

SPEAKER_02

Correct.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Or or they they think they could have done better. And you just took, you know, 14 girls from a rec program.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_00

And now they're you know they're traveling and they're playing teams that that are have been together for a while. They're committed, they're they're working on their days off. They're not they're not at home eating ho ho's and watching YouTube, bro. Like they're not on Snapchat, they're they're doing batting practice, they're doing physical fitness training, they're doing speed and agilities, they're doing they're doing catchers practice, pitching, whatever it is, they're doing their whatever it takes, whatever they know they need to work on, those girls are working on it. Yeah, you know, um and I'm not saying we don't have that up here. We have many girls. I'll I'll say this we have some of the most talented young ladies up here on the Central Coast that if we can combine a team, we can take on anybody from California. If we can take on anybody in California, tell me another state that we can't. Oh, absolutely. I mean, it's just when you get thinned out, it can be kind of difficult because there's some coaches that don't want to let their kids or let their players go back to wreck to get the extra reps, right? You know, and something I learned from nationals, which I was or state uh that I thought was really interesting. One of the coaches was talking to me and he was just letting me know like we'll play travel and wreck.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_00

We're a travel ball team, but we also play wreck. And then once the cutoff for wreck happen or for travel happens, so you can do the state and possibly nationals, they stop travel, they go completely wreck. Right, they get extra tournaments out of it, they get an extra what, like six weeks or something, something like that. And and so these teams are doing that, and I thought that was fantastic. I hope we can do something.

SPEAKER_02

You just gotta know how to play the system. That's it, you know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_00

Like, we got we got five cities around us that if we combined all the talent, yeah, we can create a a crazy central coast team that would just dominate.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, exactly. Yeah, because the talent, like you said, the talent is definitely there. It's just how do you put it together, man? And how do you keep the girls together? Politics, bro.

SPEAKER_00

That's the thing, and that's what it is in every sport, and that's what kills the sport for the kids is the politics. Yeah, because in the end, the kids just want to go out there, they just want to play, man. They want to hang out with their girlfriends or homies or whatever. Yeah, they want to go out there and they want to play, they want to have a good time, they want to make memories, they want to compete, they want to win. They and if they lose, you know, they want to gain something from it. Yeah, and uh who are we to take that from them?

SPEAKER_02

Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

I want to encourage that, I want to build that up. I want I want a girl that never thought she could make all-stars by the end of the season. Try out. Yeah, no guarantee you're gonna make it, but I want you to have the confidence that's exactly.

SPEAKER_02

They have the mindset, you know, I could I might make it, why not give it a shot?

SPEAKER_00

You know, and uh it's cool. Like, I do have kids that come up to me and say, Coach Garver, I'd love I'd love to be on your team. And I tell all of them all the time, like what it takes is just show up at tryouts and be ready, prepare, work, work. Yeah, when you show up to try out, show me. Show me you got what it takes to make it's all about hustle.

SPEAKER_02

That's it. You gotta hustle. If you don't hustle, man, like I I don't know, man. I kind of hesitate to maybe giving him an opportunity for not hustling.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you know, that's like one of my my main things I practice. Yeah, remember that? I remember games. The second, the second you get past that fence line, there's no more walk. You're if you're jogging, you're slow. You know what I mean? I remember because if you think high school ball teams want to deal with some lazy absolutely not, they don't want to do it. I didn't do my job, we didn't do our job as coaches. I want to prepare all these girls to where, yeah, you might be coming from Rhett. Right, I want you to be able to go to a high school tryout, be confident, compete, and make that exactly that's success in my opinion.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and you know what, and that that's happened. I know some of the girls are played, they're playing high school ball now. Oh, yeah. So, and I I give you a lot of credit for that because you gave them that mindset. Absolutely gave them that mindset, man. I just added the seed, bro.

SPEAKER_00

That flavor they grew, they grew that that that courage, that courage, that trust in their skills, they grew that. You know what I mean? Like we just helped them out, right? We were just a bunch of old guys out there. I always tell the kids, you probably heard me a few times, you know. I'm just an old fat guy out here trying to teach you some things I learned, and that's all we're doing. We're volunteering to teach you girls what we've learned so you can apply it in your game. I want you to take what you've learned, apply it, right, and then dominate the competition.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's it. And you've been doing this for years, brother. Yeah, a long time.

SPEAKER_00

So I love it. You know, hey, props to my daughter Hannah and my son Hunter. Yeah, props to them when they all moved on, because you know, they get the kids get to a certain level and then they move on to bigger and better things, and yeah, that's what it's all about. But when I got my youngest, you know, she got picked up, right? And you know, I was like, okay, well, you cool. Like, if I still coach or yeah, I'll I'll go with you a hundred percent. She was like, No, you you coach, keep doing your thing, keep that that keeps you happy, you know what I mean.

SPEAKER_02

And the community's happy, brother. I'm telling you right now, yeah. Orchid for sure, they they want to have you be a coach too.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I hope so.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I know, I know, bro.

SPEAKER_00

I know Tim and I and every other coach that rolls with it, we'll roll somewhere else. I know I'll I'll try out for Santa Ria, I'll try out for anywhere.

SPEAKER_02

I love this sport, and uh, and you've been very successful, by the way. Yeah, you've won it back to back, right? Back to back. Back to back, back to back. And uh, I know that it wasn't easy. No, I know it wasn't easy. I know I've had we we had some conversations where you were telling me, man, Sergio, like, I don't know, man. Yeah, we're trying to get this thing together, but it's gonna be tough.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, to all the future coaches out there, let me give you a little tip. When you think that way, you're wrong. You gotta keep pushing, just like you want these girls or these boys to keep working and get to where you want them to be. Guess what? That goes for the coaches too.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

We might have certain doubts, but that's our fault. We gotta work on those doubts, right? Right. That's why, okay. My number one thing as a coach, I don't want to be the best coach on the team, right? I want to surround my girls or my group. If I'm coaching baseball, softball, football. I want to surround my kids that I'm coaching with the absolute best that's available. That's why you were out there, bro. That's why I had Tim out there. That's why Tim Tim's still with me. He loves it just as much as me. You just moved on to bigger, brighter things, bro.

SPEAKER_02

It's just there was some stuff that happened in my family that I couldn't really get into coaching this year. Oh, no worries.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, but when you're ready, we got you.

SPEAKER_02

It's not like I'm done. You know what I mean? Like, I want to go back out there. Come on back, bro. I would love to go back out there.

SPEAKER_00

Man, let me tell y'all something about Sergio. This guy, dude, he's such a calm coach. He goes out there, he's chill, but he's got some good drills. I watched, I watch players just start to actually make great plays. And great when I say great plays, it's like, damn, where'd that come from? Oh, yeah, that's you too, man. So you're a part of this team. I appreciate it, man.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and I got I got into coaching because obviously because of my daughters. Yes, my oldest was playing, and then I got to be able to coach her teams, and then my youngest, Alyssa, the one that played on our team, yeah, you know, since she was like what six years old, whatever, all the way up until last year. Great kid. I appreciate it. Great kid. Thank you so much. And uh each season you learn a little bit something, you know? Yep. Um what I learned from you from your from being part of your team is is kind of like you just have to let them do their thing, but at the same time, you gotta be tough with them. Like you, you, you kind of you you you you know how to you know how to blend it real good, is what I'm trying to say here.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you know what I'm saying? It's kind of hard to explain. Yeah, like a spider web.

SPEAKER_02

And some coaches have a hard time doing that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so like I said, I like to surround myself with lots of coaches. Throughout all my years, I've always been surrounded. Props to every coach I ever coached with. Every single coach I've ever had has been something special for all the kids. Every kid I've ever coached has learned something from every coach that's on my staff. And props to them all, including you, man. I appreciate it. Um it's just a testament to the the men that and women who step up to do it for the right reasons.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and that's what I like. That's what I that that's what I was getting kind of getting to is like you do it for the right reasons.

SPEAKER_00

Correct.

SPEAKER_02

I want every kid to be exactly, yeah, and that that that goes a long way.

SPEAKER_00

Bro, sports is a lot more than just having fun and playing the game. Sports teaches you how to work as a team, right? How to problem solve, how to follow direction, how to not be lazy, absolutely, how to get it done when the grind is real. Because I tell the kids all the time, when when they're if you heard some of our my if you heard some of my mound visits, bro, I know I'm straight. I'm straight. Like if you're off, you're off, and I'm letting you know you're off. Yeah, you know, and if you're in your head, I'm letting you know, hey, you're in your head, and you're the only reason you're in your head, you know. So we have our moments, and uh that's an art though.

SPEAKER_02

The way you do it, it's an art form. Oh, yeah, you know what I'm saying? That that's why I was like, man, just watching you out there and the way you just conducted yourself and the whatever conversations you had out there on the mound, and then you just you just seen like something click or something spark, and then that conversation created you know, it whatever changed the momentum, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Testament to the kids I coach, yeah. Because again, they learn and they apply, yeah, and then they dominate, but that doesn't stop them from getting in their head. Yeah, and my whole thing is is even in life, when you get in your head, you're doubting yourself. You gotta you're beating yourself up if you're in the middle of a ball game and you're in your head and you're frustrated and you're doubting yourself. Guess what? That's just a seed you're planning, and you're gonna grow that outcome. So, how about we get rid of that nonsense? You understand that was just a bad play, yeah, and the next one's gonna be fantastic.

SPEAKER_02

And it does happen a lot, it happens, bro.

SPEAKER_00

It happens a lot, and then you just gotta remind these kids like girls, boys, it don't matter. I've watched, yeah, I've what I've I've witnessed girls play ball better than some of them boys I've coached, yeah. You know, not taking anything away from any of those boys, they have their talents too. But these we have some really talented athletes here. Oh, absolutely, and uh, but the whole thing is is my whole goal is to just get these kids going, get them, get them out of their heads, get them out of their phones, let them understand like this is a sport, but it's teaching life, yeah, and life lessons for sure. And you pick up what you can, yeah, and you just roll with it.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, question for you though. Uh were you always involved with sports even at a young age? How did that happen for you?

SPEAKER_00

Man, I moved so much, it was sometimes hard. Uh, did a lot of rec, a lot of rec ball, loved rec ball, got into high school, played a little bit of high school ball. Um, but you know, I ain't gonna lie, I was a ladies' man back then. And you know when girls get just like with girls, uh boys getting the it's it changes everything. You know what I mean? All of a sudden you're being asked to hey, can you come and help me over here with the homework or hey, we're going to this party. You know, I was a teenage kid, you know, and of course living in Lompok, you know, so yeah, uh, but in the end, you know, you have kids, bro. Like you said, in a blink of an eye, boom, life changes.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

And uh, I had kids, and you know, you we all got the emails. Yep, y'all got the emails from every league you've ever put to from soccer, basketball, baseball, so it doesn't matter, hockey. It doesn't matter, you're gonna get an email from the league saying we need help with coaches, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And you you don't know if anybody else is responding, so you sign up, and yeah, and sometimes sometimes they're like not not to sound mean, but sometimes they're almost like begging you to come, please.

SPEAKER_00

We need you, we need you, you won't be able to, but in the end, I uh after being involved for so long, I will say this there is some a lot of times where if there isn't a volunteer, there's no 14U, right, or there's no 12U league, yeah, and that's not fair to those girls. So, you know, if you have the desire to coach, because that's the number one thing, is you gotta have the desire because it's a commitment. You're putting you're putting in hours of time, and then for me, that it does practice when practice is over, that's just the first few hours. There's still more to it, man. While I'm working, I'm getting emails, I'm getting text messages, I'm getting from the board from and and I love it all. Don't get me wrong. I love the managing part, I love it because um, in the end, when you win or even lose, I've been on the losing side too. In the end, you got to watch a lot of these kids grow up, right? And even though it was for just a couple of months, you got to watch these kids go from kids that were doing cartwheels in the outfield, you know chasing butterflies, chasing butterflies on the infield, just to dominating. Yeah, and hey, I've seen it in it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's a good feeling. Yeah, it's great.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's great.

SPEAKER_02

Girls that I coached when they were like seven years old, and now they're in high school, and you're like, hey, coach, you know, thank you for whatever you did back, you know, 10, whatever, seven, eight years ago. Love it. They still remember those little moments, and it's awesome. Oh, it's a great feeling.

SPEAKER_00

The best feeling in the world, right? Yeah, is when don't get me wrong, I love it. I'm all I always love to go watch my kids play. I'm the I'm their number one fans. But something that really tickles my heart a lot is when kids I coach that are playing in high school, yeah, you know, and they're like, hey coach, we're playing home. It's a big game. You want to come and watch? Hell yeah, we'll be there. Yeah, damn right. I I watched St. Joe's versus Raghetti. I watched L OA. Yo, these kids ball. These kids ball. I can't wait to see what colleges they go to because guess what? All these kids we coach, bro, they're so good now that they're gonna be able to go to college because they got the grades. Oh, yeah, and they got they got the talent, yeah. You know, and they're gonna go to college and they're gonna play for sure. I know I have faith in all these girls and boys that I've coached, man. They're going places, dude.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, they are for sure. Um, let's kind of change it up a little bit here. Let's go. Let's go. Um, what do you what do you enjoy doing off the ball field?

SPEAKER_00

Okay, oh man, I'm a homebody, bro.

SPEAKER_02

You're kind of like me then.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dude. I built my own. I mean, I'm not check this out. I don't even drink much, and I built myself a like a five thousand dollar bar, and I got a I got the bottles for days. I I've seen it. And what it's for is impressive. For when my friends come, yeah. You know, my friends come over. Hey, you want a drink? I'll have a drink with you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we had a we had a couple shots.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dude, it's nice to just be able to toast a little bit. Yeah, I like to barbecue. Uh I like to sit around and play with my pups. I like to hang out with the wife and kids, you know.

SPEAKER_02

But besides that, love coaching, I love working on days I want to work, but I you know and you work for the city, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I work for the city of Central.

SPEAKER_02

So that's like a whole different thing right there. Working in the city.

SPEAKER_00

So I went from nine like 19 years as a cable guy, and then every day, every job was different. Every person I met was different.

SPEAKER_02

When you mean cable, like you mean like like uh oh I did it all TV cable or yeah, TV I worked for uh Delphi cable, Tom Warner cable, okay, Comcast cable, Xfinity, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I did um lots of rewires. I did a lot of data. I did um lots of drop wires from the pole. I was a pole guy.

SPEAKER_02

See, I I was I was a wireman in the Marine Corps.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, so you know what's up. You're a gaffer, aren't you? So yeah, and and then and then I and then you're gonna go, big dog.

SPEAKER_02

And then I was a radio operator too. Okay, cool. But I I started off as a wire guy, yeah. Like uh running cables, digging trenches, yeah, you know, climbing the poles. Yeah, uh, so I know what you're talking about. That's what I was saying. You're a wired cable guy?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I was a cable guy for 19 years. I started off as kind of a trip, dude. Yeah, so gonna take you back a little bit. We were dating. This is like within the first we've been together 25 years, and uh for the first five uh first five years, I want to say, uh, you know, I was still doing the same thing, just trying to survive, working three jobs, blah, blah, blah. She's going to school, you know, and I I figured, all right, I gotta figure something out. She got pregnant with my beautiful son, you know, uh after so many years. And uh I ended up going to school to become an EMT. I was gonna, I was I truly wanted to be a firefighter paramedic. That was my my goal in life. But uh life happens and my driving record, you know, from being young caught up to me. And then we can't put you behind one of our wheels, dude. Like, no matter if you're serving. You were too wild, huh? Nah, dude. Um to yeah. Um yeah, and then uh not dangerous, just you know you knew how to have a good time. Yeah, there you go. Yeah, that's a great way to put it. There you go. So that that kind of you know turned my my future a little bit. So I just figured out what's next. And one of my buddies, uh Adrian, who was staying with me in my house that I had, and uh he was just like, yo, I can get you in with uh a contracting company that works for uh Adelphi Cable. Bet whatever makes me money, bro. He's like, it makes good money. And it did, it did, it brought in a lot of money, they paid the bills, but I worked 14-hour days, 16 hour dude. I go to when my son was born, I was going to work when he was still asleep. It was dark outside. Yeah, and I come home and he had he was asleep. I didn't see my son for the first three years of his life, really. Exactly on my day. Yeah, but you know what? Us dads, we get it done. Yeah, and then on my days off, of course, we we do our thing, you know, we drive around in my little Ford Ranger, you know, and we'd be I got my little boy in a car seat and a little bucket truck and bumping some Mac 10, you know, or something. Yeah, you know, so something, you know, just having fun. And um, I want to say three after about three years of that, man, I was I was done. I was like, all right, check this out. I'm gonna apply for the in-house position. Because within that company, I didn't just stay an installer, they moved me up to supervisor, manager, director, and at the uh, or I'm sorry, not director, area manager. And when I got to that level, bro, I'm gonna tell you, I hated it. I don't like firing people. Oh, really? That's what it was? Yeah, I was yeah, I was the um I saved contracts. Okay, so pretty much we'd have installers that would make some pretty bad mistakes, and then I'd have to go out there fix the mistake, right, and then save a contract. So I'd be in meetings with Time Warner Cable with their execs and explaining how I'm gonna fix the problem. Yeah, and this is why you want to keep our contract. And I did, man. I came in, and you know, when you do stuff like that, you're you're talking and you know, you got like 50, 60 technicians that are about to lose their jobs because of one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that sucks, man.

SPEAKER_00

You can't do that, bro. So I'd have to go in and figure out what the where the problems were and you know give them their opportunities to adjust, but if they couldn't, you gotta cut them loose. Gotta cut them, and that's and honestly, for me, I I don't want to be that guy. Yeah, so I I ended up doing this, got in the in-house and just pretty much went all the way up. I got but I loved it. I loved the lineman work, bro. I love being on a hot day, being 30 feet in the air and feeling the wind. Yeah, oh, nothing better than that.

SPEAKER_02

Isn't there something about like working outside?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I love brother. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I love it.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I love it. Um, but you know, life changes and you need something like union, you know.

SPEAKER_02

You know, I never I've never been part of a union.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I'll tell you something. I never you know, there's good and bad. Yeah, you know, there's good and bad with union, you know, the ones that do normally cause issues, it's harder to get rid of. But hey, that's life, you know, whatever. You know, you just my thing is I go in with a happy attitude. You have to, man. Yeah, smile on my face. Nobody wants to see you frowning.

SPEAKER_02

And that's the thing about you, Jeremy. Always smiling, man. Yeah, don't get me wrong, bro. When it comes, when it's time to put that other face, you you do it well. Yeah, but you're the guy that's like, oh, there's Jeremy, big old smile.

SPEAKER_00

Gotta lead, bro.

SPEAKER_02

Example. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Right. If I can if I can have the kind of day I have and smile through it, what the hell is your excuse? Exactly. Because if you see what I do in a day, it would blow your mind, bro. You would be like, No way am I doing that job, but I do it.

SPEAKER_02

I bet you uh so like right now you work for the city, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So I bet you got some stories too with the city. I bet. No, I mean nothing that you I mean, you don't have to share if you don't want to, but I'm just saying, like, nothing negative, nothing.

SPEAKER_00

I honestly love my job, bro. I love it. I work for Public Works, great, yeah, great crew, bro. Oh my god, best crew I've ever been on. That's awesome. Not hating on any of my other crews, but nah, these guys, um I got a great group of guys I work with, good, what's even better? Great managers, great supervisors, guys that actually care. No, the the best thing to see as an as an adult, man, woman, doesn't matter. When you're working for a place, a company, or or anywhere, you see people retiring. That's a great sign. Oh, yeah. Because where I came from, once you hit 40, that's your deadlock. If you're not management, 95% of the time you ain't making it to manage you, you're not gonna make it to retirement. You're done, right? You're done. You're gonna get you're gonna get a float out, you know. So I wanted to get into something where I saw people retire. And my neighbor across the street, she retired.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and she was like, You'd be perfect. You'd be why don't you try go get a job with the city? I was just like, you know what, that's a good idea. I I'll try it out.

SPEAKER_02

And you've been you've been with the city now for a few years.

SPEAKER_00

Uh 2017. Oh, okay. Yeah, I've been there for a minute. Yeah. And um usually after my five-year mark, I know if I want to stay or I want to go. I'm staying. I don't even want to switch positions. Yeah, I want to stay right now. You're in a good spot, too. I want to be right where I'm at because I love it. Now, if that ever changes, hey, moving on up. I'll move on up, you know.

SPEAKER_02

But just like the Jefferson.

SPEAKER_00

But right now, dude, I I love where I'm at, dude. And they they love the fact I coach. Uh I love the fact that, you know, I'm gonna be taking vacation time to go get my son set up at ASU, travel with my daughter for a travel ball team. Shout out to the Sun Caps. Shout out, you know, Coach Rosal, get it get it, Coach Jason, get to get it. Um, but yeah, dude, um, they they they have no problems with it. I'm a family guy, bro.

SPEAKER_02

Like, oh, I know that. I know that for sure.

SPEAKER_00

So uh don't get me wrong, I love being a part of the community, but yeah, family, family's what keeps me centered, bro. Going home just seeing the goofiness. You know, like it's great.

SPEAKER_02

Um let's see here. Let me let me go let me go let me ask you this right here. All right, tough question. Is there something that you've that you have become passionate about um as you've gotten older that has nothing to do with sports though?

SPEAKER_00

Ooh, that's a good question. Yeah, actually, um for I want to say for the past like five years now, I really have been working on being the best dad. Yeah, the best son. You know, I take care of my mom, you know, best brother, take care of my brother. Yeah, I met your brother, yeah. Yeah, great guy, great guy, you know, yeah, fun guy. People go through things, yeah. You know, no, no, not hating on my brother. He's a hard working man, he's doing his thing. Right. Uh, but we all have those moments, right? You know, everybody does. Everybody needs help every now and then. I'm in a position now where I can actually help out. So um for me, I've just been trying to improve myself because you know, we all have things just like players, right? Right, right. You got things to work on, well, getting out of the sports realm same thing in life. Each individual person has something to work on before you know I let stresses get to me. And I'd I get in my head, dude. Yeah, I'd seriously go against everything I coach, you know, and I caught myself. Actually, no, I'm sorry. Sorry, my daughter caught me out. Okay, she called me out, you know, and I don't even think she realized it, but I I clicked on to that, and uh yeah, I just started working on myself, and I'm not saying I'm perfect, bro. No way, yeah, but I'm better than I was five years ago.

SPEAKER_02

And that's what matters.

SPEAKER_00

That's what matters. Hey, dude, you improvement, improvement.

SPEAKER_02

Learn, you apply, and then you dominate with what you're that's it, and it's good to work on yourself because um there's always things that are happening in your life right now, things are gonna change in five years, and you might have to work on something else. Oh, yeah. So you're always evolving, you're always evolving.

SPEAKER_00

There you yeah, yeah, you nailed it, bro. Yeah, everybody's because we all plateau, yeah, right. There's all even when you're lifting weights or you're or you're running. Like I went through the whole, you know, two years of non-stop running. I try I was my goal was hit seven miles, bro, in an hour. Yeah, or no, it was an hour and thirty. It was my goal. I want to hit this, you know. I started off, I could barely get four miles because I'm fat. No, don't say that. I lost like 60 pounds, so and it was my weight to lose, so I could say I was fat. You know, I watched every drop hit that map, you know. Right. I w I I witnessed the change, dude. And uh yeah, man, just um gosh, that was that was hell. I'll tell you that. I'm not a fan of running.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I'm not anymore either, man.

SPEAKER_00

But I'll say this, it it it changed my life. Yeah, you know, I I was told by a doctor, yeah, we have options for you. You know, I can I can help you out, we can cut you open. I looked at her like, damn, you want to cut me open instead of telling me just go run? Right, you know, I'm like, no, I don't want to do this the old natural way. The whole way Coach Lara would have told me, or Coach Lucan from Law Book, you know, like, hey, go run it off, yeah, you know, work it off. And that's what I did, dude.

SPEAKER_02

But a lot of people don't want to do it the hard way.

SPEAKER_00

It's hard, bro. It's hard. I ain't gonna lie, my ankles hurt, my knees hurt, my back hurts. Dude, I had places on my body I didn't even know I had places of that would hurt. Where did that come from? Yeah, you know, and uh, but you know, after you know you drop 20, yeah, another 20, and you're gonna plateau.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, man.

SPEAKER_00

And I plateaued after about a year. I I couldn't lose any more weight, and I'm running my butt off of me and rent. My my wife is making these special no sugar, no carb meals that were delicious. By the way, shout out to Maris. Shout out to Maris. Um yeah, she really was there for me, and uh, I would just plateau. I couldn't, and I was tripping out, and then I just kept pushing, bro. And then I got through it, and actually no, I dropped another 20. And then I got to my goal weight, and I was cool, and then all stars. That's what happened when I was hey no, it was all stars, it was the traveling. It was like, damn, dude, we spent all day out in the fields. Where are we gonna eat? Pizza, pizza, we had a lot of pizza, a lot of pizza, a lot of pizza shout outs to pizza, but yeah, we had a lot of pizza, you know, gained a little back.

SPEAKER_02

So when I when I met you last year, so you had already lost oh, tons, bro.

SPEAKER_00

I was like pushing 300, bro.

SPEAKER_02

Really?

SPEAKER_00

And I'm not a tall guy.

SPEAKER_02

I'm see, I didn't I didn't know you then.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I was a big boy. Okay, and this is why Tim and I get along so well, because he was a big boy too, yeah, and he lost a bunch of weight, and he had his wife helping out.

SPEAKER_02

Man, that's I didn't know that. Yeah, I did not know that.

SPEAKER_00

You know, we all go through our own individual struggles. Some have alcohol issues, you know, some have certain vices, dude. And mine was addictions, it was a mixture of things, you know, and yeah, laziness was one of them. Uh well, physical laziness, my mental state, like I was always working, right? I was always doing something. Um, but physical, like where you're I had to sweat for an hour, yeah. So it took me 30 minutes to really start sweating, right? So I had to run an extra 30 minutes just to get to where you need to be able to start my hour, yeah. So that's where the hour 30 came. Gotcha. And uh I did that for a couple of years, and it worked. It worked, and I'm you know, well, good for you, man. Telling the kids the same thing, run, run, get out there, man. Hit that pavement, whatever it is, dude. Yeah, you know, just do it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I have bad knees now, so it's hard for me to get out there and run for long distances.

SPEAKER_00

You know what I hear a lot of is I don't want to work out where other people I don't know are. Yeah, you know, it's embarrassing. Yeah, I tell them, dude, go find a used elliptical or treadmill.

SPEAKER_02

That's all you need.

SPEAKER_00

Pop it into a socket and just run. Yeah, you know, just do it just 30 minutes three times a week, and I guarantee you'll change your life.

SPEAKER_02

I just walk now, bro.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, that works too, dude. We just got to do longer walks.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we take my dog for walks, we take him to the beach. And that for me, that's good. Yep, because my body took a beating when I was in the Marine Corps. So I feel like I'm 80, brother.

SPEAKER_00

If you haven't seen this man, this man's in great shape. So hey, uh, you're you're Do a great surgery.

SPEAKER_02

No, but I wake up in the morning sometimes. I literally I have to get pushed out of bed because it hurts. Yeah, sometimes. Like I just feel it everywhere. Um, and I'm like, dude, I'm I'm not even that old, but I feel like it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, I'll wake up and my my foot's locked, yeah. You know, or my neck is just joints. You're oh, I'm beat up, dude. And you know what? Once I get my cup of coffee in me, you know what I mean, with my sugarless creamer.

SPEAKER_02

And then and then, of course, your diet cokes later on.

SPEAKER_00

I'm the Diet Coke coach, bro.

SPEAKER_02

That's and my bad man, I did not have any diet cokes in today.

SPEAKER_00

So don't even say that.

SPEAKER_02

So uh next time I'll I'll definitely have some back. And I should know better, but I should have known better, but I'm the diet.

SPEAKER_00

If y'all don't know me, uh whenever I'm coaching, I always got diet cokes. That's just my thing. That's my thing. That's what keeps me going.

SPEAKER_02

They were a staple in your wagon.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, absolutely. I always got my my diet cokes in there. So, you know, yeah. If you ever want to get a coach's gift, you know, diet coke. Diet coke. All right.

SPEAKER_02

What Jeremy, what's what's one thing that people don't know about you?

SPEAKER_00

Oh wow.

SPEAKER_02

I know, just putting you on the spot, huh?

SPEAKER_00

No, that's cool. I like that. Um, well, it's actually uh gonna depend because you know, people from Romp know everything about me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um until I moved out.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So now they don't know much unless you're still a part of my life. Like you really haven't caught up with me. Because I don't really post everything on Facebook and social media. I don't either. I don't do that because the big moments, cool. Yeah, enjoy the pictures. But for the moment most part, if you're not if we're not talking, like there's no point. Right. You know what I mean? So um something about me that nobody else would know. Oh, bro. I love Apex Legends.

SPEAKER_02

What is that?

SPEAKER_00

That is a video game on okay. All right, now check this out. I've I've gone back and forth because my boy and I, we had this thing on Skyrim. Elders we're video gamers, okay, okay. Gamers, yeah, gamers, dude. Just it's a bonding thing. Yeah, yeah, you know, and uh we did the whole Elder Scroll Skyrim, which took like five years to beat. Uh and we swore this is the greatest game of all time. And then my homeboy Derek shout out to D Rock 805. Uh he uh got me onto this game called Apex, and it's just kind of cartoonish, it's a shoot 'em up game. It's you know, it's first person shooter. Yeah, fun. Yeah, it's fun, and you get to play with all kinds of people. So I got on this and I started it when it was in like the beta version, like barely coming out. Okay, and uh what seven years later we're still playing.

SPEAKER_01

No way, dude.

SPEAKER_00

I've dropped like thousands. I ain't gonna lie, thousands of dollars, bro. My whole my son, check this out. My son, we all right, he would do chores, right? Give him an allowance, yeah. Of course, and he put that on apex coins. No way, the whole allowance, bro, for years would go on to Apex, dude. This kid was all into it, and so was I. So, yeah, you know, I'd see a a new suit that came out for one of the players. I'm like, I'll buy that. How much is it? 40 bucks. All right, cool.

SPEAKER_02

Is that what is that what kids nowadays are doing with some of the like I don't what's that game that's uh real popular right now where they buy skins? That's what it is, right?

SPEAKER_00

Is it kind of the same concept? It's kind of the same concept. As a matter of fact, they they're they're kind of enemies, okay. But uh yeah, I just love Apex Legends, but I think I burnt out all the kids because I mean I got all the neighborhood kids that always come over to my house since uh COVID. When COVID hit, um, I couldn't stand having kids just sitting in their rooms the whole time. Oh, I know. So I told my boy, I said, Hey, let's get a workout thing going. That's how this all started. Yeah, got this workout thing going and opened up my gym to the the local kids, dude. Next you know, I have like 10 kids at my house working out in my front yard. You know, nobody ever got COVID. They worked their butts off. Okay, swear to God, yeah, I I turned chubby kids into kids that are going to ASM or going going they're going places because they've got the work ethic. I watched kids that stayed at home and did nothing and kind of still doing the same thing.

SPEAKER_02

Do you think that this might sound cra might sound crazy?

SPEAKER_00

If you hear some of the things I hear, dude, nothing sounds crazy.

SPEAKER_02

Like if you're working out, you know, and you you got a regimen going where your your body is physically doing something consistently. Do you think you're healthier? I mean, like you think you fight off, you're more prone to fight off diseases or whatever. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. You're sweating out toxins, bro.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, there you go.

SPEAKER_00

You know, you're hydrating. Yeah, because you're getting to get thirsty. What are you gonna do? Drink it. I don't even drink Diet Coke when I'm working out, right? Okay, that's the one time you'll get some actual H2O and me is right there. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know if I ever saw you drink water, though.

SPEAKER_00

Because you never saw me work out, but no, like you working out. Um, it it does change. Yeah, it does, it does, it makes you healthier, it keeps you focused. You know, I watched kids that were my you know, I'm not gonna say no names, but I have people in my own family started getting depressed.

SPEAKER_02

Oh man, that's huge.

SPEAKER_00

Horrible, man, everything, bro. Horrible. And when it's your own, it's even closer to home, you know. Yeah, and I I'm not gonna be the parent that just doesn't do nothing. Right. So, well, let's get you buff. Let's see if that helps, you know. Because you know, self-esteem, man, bro. You know, yeah, this happened during COVID, but you know, he it could happen at any time, yeah. Um, so it worked. I had him work his butt off and he got buffed.

SPEAKER_02

Paid off.

SPEAKER_00

Paid off. Depression, peace out. Yeah, something changes when a hot girl starts talking to you. You know what I mean? Oh, for sure. Oh, for sure. Unless you're married, then you're like, No, no, no, of course not. We're talking teenagers. We're talking teenagers. Something changes when someone you never thought would talk to you is all of a sudden talking to you, and now it's a you know it's amazing, huh? It's amazing. So, yeah, you know, I just like to watch growth. I like to watch people become something they didn't think they could become.

SPEAKER_02

Like you said, evolve. Evolve, yeah. You said that. Yeah, you said that evolve into something else, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And it's like, oh my gosh, hit that next level.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, there you go.

SPEAKER_00

Next level, next level.

SPEAKER_02

Um let me hit you with a little rapid fire here. You good with a little a little rapid fire? Yeah, let's go.

SPEAKER_00

I'm about it.

SPEAKER_02

Coffee or energy drink?

SPEAKER_00

Coffee, homie. All right, I'm old school. Coffee all the way up, you beach or mountains. Ooh. Depends on the time of year.

SPEAKER_02

Let's say right now, uh, we're what are we in June?

SPEAKER_00

Mountains, bro. Mountains. Mountains, oh lake life. Let's go.

SPEAKER_02

Let's go. Fishy, little fishing?

SPEAKER_00

Oh no, I just like lakes. Okay. You know, less likely to get eaten by a shark in a lake.

SPEAKER_02

That's true. Morning person or night person? Morning. Okay, favorite movie.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I've had a couple, but the hmm. All right, this is gonna sound wild. Just just bring it. Kung Fu Panda dog.

SPEAKER_02

Kung Fu Panda's a good one, man.

SPEAKER_00

You know why? So the kids and I No, no, nothing wrong with Kung Fu Panda, bro. The kids asked me what kind of superhero would you be? I said, Poe.

SPEAKER_02

Of course.

SPEAKER_00

They laughed at me. I said, bro, I hate stairs and I love dumplings. What's up? You know what I mean? Let's go. Perfect, brother.

SPEAKER_02

All right. Um, favorite food.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, favorite food. Um, my wife's meatloaf.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, some meatload.

SPEAKER_00

Love it, bro.

SPEAKER_02

You know, I swear to God, I was just talking to my wife two nights ago and said, babe, we haven't had meatloaf in a while. Bro, love some meatloaf.

SPEAKER_00

Yo, when it's made right, oh my god. Oh, yeah, life changing. You do so much with it.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, of course.

SPEAKER_00

Turn it in a sandwich if you want, dog.

SPEAKER_02

You have to, but leftovers, leftover meatloaf sandwich.

SPEAKER_00

That's a fat guy in meat, dog.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I think everybody loves meatloaf for the most part, man. Um, if you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would it be with?

SPEAKER_00

My father.

SPEAKER_02

Father.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. I restless soul. All right, rest in peace. Yeah, I love you, man. Uh, he did more than he should have.

SPEAKER_02

That's awesome, though. Yeah, I love him. Yeah. Uh what's your guilty pleasure TV show?

SPEAKER_00

My guilty pleasure TV show. Yeah. Oh goodness. Which one is it now? My guilty pleasure TV show. Honestly, it'll probably be Jesse Waters.

SPEAKER_02

Jesse, what's what's Jesse Waters?

SPEAKER_00

What is that? It's just a TV show on Fox. I like that show. He's stupid.

SPEAKER_02

Is it like commentary or what?

SPEAKER_00

It's political, but okay. I enjoy it. Besides that, um, what else would I want to watch? Oh, bro, the unexplained. Can't go wrong with the unexplained. And then if you're asking me what I want to watch when I go to bed, bro, ancient aliens.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, dude.

SPEAKER_00

Or or or that oak island, because when they find wood, they get all excited. And for me, it's like, okay, it's wood in the earth. Great job, dude.

SPEAKER_02

But yeah, dude, ancient aliens. I put that on the background when I want to take a nap.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dude, and you fall right to bed.

SPEAKER_02

But no, but it's interesting stuff. It's just if I want just the way they talk, and it's so soothing.

SPEAKER_00

Dude, I pass out in a minute or two. It's the best, bro. Try it when you're when you're a little tipsy and you start to spin, put that on, you'll be oh no time.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, all right. Now getting back to um, I just wanted to do that rapid firework. I love it. Just make it. I wanted to make it just change it up a little bit there. But coming back to um community, right? All right. Um, what motivates you to give so much back to the league?

SPEAKER_00

To OISA?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, to the league.

SPEAKER_00

Oh man, the experiences I've had there are just so much. Um the friendships, the kids, dude. Those girls, those girls I've watched come out and just get bruised up and still play. Battle. Battle, man. And the chants, bro. Tell me those dugout chants aren't vague. Oh my gosh, man. This is something this is something that every other sport doesn't understand. Girls in softball will talk so much crap. Oh, yeah, but in a chant. And honestly, I watch that sometimes and I'm listening to them, and I'm just like, yo, you girls are dude.

SPEAKER_02

Some of those chants were brutal, bro. Brutal, bro.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's like, yo, all right, keep it going. They keep they get very creative, you know, but be careful, yeah. Because sometimes I might bite you in the butt. You might be chanting one inning, and the next inning, you're crickets. You're crying. Hey, shots out to Reggetty and St. Joe's. That was a battle, but I'll tell you in the end, it came back to the chirping.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

There was one team that wouldn't stop chirping, and that other team that wasn't chirping, they shut them up.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah. And it it brings momentum, bro.

SPEAKER_00

I'm telling you.

SPEAKER_02

It brings and it changes momentum. Oh, I'm telling you, just depends on the team, though.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, just depends on if you got a really mentally like mentally strong team, yeah. Chirping's not gonna work, bro.

SPEAKER_02

No, you're right, yeah. You're right.

SPEAKER_00

Chirping's not gonna work. Yeah, you know, uh, capitalizing on mistakes is what's gonna work, but the chirping ain't. But I still love the chirping. That's fun to watch, man. So much fun in the walk-up songs. I just dig the walk-up songs.

SPEAKER_02

I was about to say the Whopper, the Whop Whopper. I'm thinking of Whopper, bro. I think I'm hungry.

SPEAKER_00

Shut up the dirt, King, let's go.

SPEAKER_02

No, but yeah, the walk-up songs definitely get me hyped. Yeah, as a coach.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, let me ask you a question. Yeah, if you were oh, sorry, no, no, you're good. If you were gonna have a walk-up song as a coach, walking around the coach. I already know what mine is, what's yours?

SPEAKER_02

Oh man. Um that's a good one, man. Uh, I I would have to say, because I'm old school guy.

SPEAKER_00

Keep it real. Come on.

SPEAKER_02

I'm old school, brother. So uh something it would have to be something along the lines of like Wu-Tang clan.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, ain't nothing, you know what with it.

SPEAKER_02

That's the one right there. Or some ice cube or something. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So Wu Tang Wu-Tang clan, man. I get it. I love that.

SPEAKER_02

I I grew up growing up out here, like in the central coast. You know, I grew up out here. Like, I was born in San Abysball, raised in Guadalupe, went to Regetti High School, and I was a little hip hop junkie, brother. Love it growing up. Yeah, and then I evolved. Yeah, of course, I guess I got older. Now I'm a country guy, dude. Hey, you know what? Do you believe it?

SPEAKER_00

Country leveled up, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It did.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, Willie Nelson broke the broke broke it open, dude. Yeah, I love Willie, dude. But uh, yeah, no, um, country country style. I'm a fan of Brentley Gilbert. Oh, that's that's that man right there, yeah, has written some great songs, amazing songs, bro. Yeah, oh man.

SPEAKER_02

And I and you know, and I used to listen to country even back in the uh, you know, on on back when I had my iPod.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, of course, you know. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I I had a little country, you know, section, you know, 10, 12 songs, maybe of Brooks. Yeah. Neon Blue, you know. Um, but uh but now, man, it's like my whole it seems like my whole playlist playlist is mostly country.

SPEAKER_00

You know, I get into Mount Westmore. Have you ever listened to this? Yeah, Legends, bro. I love that. I love their I love how they came together and made that album. Um I think Too Big is my favorite.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

That that just hits, bro. It hit. I love it. Yeah, uh, country, but you can't go wrong with some Chris Staple too.

SPEAKER_02

Oh no, man. You know, like that man is just that dude has a very unique voice, and he he has a lot of soul. He has a lot of soul.

SPEAKER_00

But there's so many country artists out right now. Oh, too many. Too many. I'll go to every one of their concerts, I'll pay money to go.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you know. But I got but but in my heart, I still got that, you know, the hip hop in me. You know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_00

Always a little lighter shade of brown. Oh, yeah. Let's go. That's a hot poke in me, dude.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I remember when lighter shader brown came to Reggett. Yeah. When I was in high school, it came and did a little performance out here.

SPEAKER_00

I was too poor to come. Yeah, I remember. Oh, yeah, I remember that.

SPEAKER_02

Good times, man. Um next question. What keeps you coming back every year, man, to the league? Oh. I know you kind of spoke on it a little bit.

SPEAKER_00

So, okay, here's the here's the real reason. Number one, coaching is a hobby. Yeah, it keeps me, it keeps me balanced, it keeps me enjoying life a little bit. Other than family, of course. Right, right. But in the end, like I'm a you know, one day we're gonna have an empty nest. Yeah, and I ain't gonna want to drive my wife crazy. Oh no. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_02

Are you sure about that though? No. I'm just messing with you.

SPEAKER_00

So no, I hit the field student. Honestly, what brings me back that's a good question. What brings me back every year is the year prior.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

The year prior watching what we started at and seeing where we ended at.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And knowing and knowing that every one of those girls were successful at stuff.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then that on top of at the end of every season, always have some kids come up to the youngster. Yeah. About to get to my level where I'm coaching at. I really want to I really want to play with the coach.

SPEAKER_02

That's the best, man.

SPEAKER_00

I gotta show up to trials.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because I tell them, okay, well, you gotta show up. Yeah, you gotta work in the offseason. You gotta work and be ready for these trials. Glove in the dirt. Yeah, be out in front. Tack the ball.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Go at it. Don't be afraid of it. Go at it. Exactly. Your parents bought you a glove for a reason. Yeah. Don't worry about your face. Catch it.

SPEAKER_01

Don't worry about your face.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, catch it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Catch it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, dude. And these kids coming up and wanting to be coached by me and my staff. That's why. I cannot not come back after I just got asked by like seven, eight kids.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_00

I want to play for you.

SPEAKER_02

And I know they want you back.

SPEAKER_00

And I can't show up to a tryout.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like, who the hell am I? I'm just an old fat guy. The least I could do is show up for these kids, you know? Until I'm told I can't. Like, yeah, you know, you're too old now. You know? Alright, cool. I'll watch from the stands there. You know what I mean? But um, no, I love it. I love coaching. I just love it. Oh, I know you love coaching. It's just something I love.

SPEAKER_02

Um, next question. What has the league taught you about people?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, there's all kinds. Yeah. All kinds.

SPEAKER_02

If you could just say like one thing. Just people in general.

SPEAKER_00

We're all good.

SPEAKER_02

We're all good. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I've I've I thought I I've met people I didn't know I was gonna like. You know, come on. You know, you coach against people and they act a certain way, and then after a year or two of playing against them or putting them in the stands, get a moment to drink with them, or you're somewhere and you guys eat and you can start chopping it up. Yes, you know, you're you're home.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Happened with so many people where oh, I drafted their kid, you know, and now their kid is loving playing for my team. And I I think that's probably what I've learned the most is people I never thought I would ever have a chance to get to know. I got the chance to get to know. And I'm blessed for that because honestly, everybody I've met, I've found something good in. Right. So I I'm blessed.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and I I know that you know, you being around the league, the community. I know you make a difference. I try because I've seen it, brother. I've seen it, I've seen it.

SPEAKER_00

Honestly, uh, I just try. Yeah, there's so many of us out there that could do it. But you know, a lot a lot of people just busy. We're all busy. Trust me. I'm I'm slammed from 4 a.m. until I go to bed.

SPEAKER_02

I know. Slammed up once again, bro. That's why I I really appreciate you coming out.

SPEAKER_00

Are you kidding me? I'll come anytime you ask me to come. You you shoot me a message, say, yo, I want you in the studio. I'll be here. Yeah, be here, doc. I know you. Um, yeah, we're all busy, but it just takes somebody who has the want to make a difference. Step up. Right. I shouldn't be the only one. You shouldn't be the only one. Tim shouldn't be the only one. And there's so many other coaches, you know, but yeah, every year there's a shortage. And that goes for umpires too, man. Oh, yeah, yeah. They umpires. Okay, something cool I actually saw this season. I'm really impressed with. They brought in kids for um really that play ball. Okay, they come in and they umpire, they make some money. Yeah, bro, they call good games, they call fair games, both sides. As a coach, sometimes we're oh wait, it was you know, you always have your complaints, you know what I mean? But since I've been in it for so long, I I've seen, you know, no, that's not that's not the way it is. It's just what they saw. Right. Well, I get these kids out there and they just got fresh eyes, and they're and they're they're more focused on making a uh calling a good game, right? Because it's the beginning of their career, yeah. You know, I mean they don't have any they want to make the impression, huh? They don't they don't have beefs with right, they don't have problems with coaches yet. Yeah, you know, God bless them. Thank God because you're calling a good game. Yeah, what drives me crazy, and I'm not saying it's happened to me, but I've seen, you know, and uh you have yours, you've heard, but uh when certain people that take that position will take it out on certain people.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah, I've seen it.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so when that when you're doing that in that position, when you're doing that, you're not affecting the coach because the coach is gonna have another season, but those kids, those kids are the ones that work their butts off right all season to get here. You know what I mean? Like you gotta take then it goes for us coaches too, right? We gotta take our personal things out of the whole game, yeah, and just apply what we need to do on the field, right? So um, watching these young kids come in, man, I give them all the props in the world, and I hope it doesn't stop. I hope, I hope all softball, baseball, football, hockey, basketball get the kids involved, man, because honestly, they're they're young, they're youthful, they can keep up, they can make the right calls because they just went through it, right? You know what I mean? And uh I love it. I love it. I think that's probably one of the best things I've seen recently is the boards bringing in some youthful umpires. No, no hating. I'm not hating on any umpires in the world. I know what you're saying. But there was such a shortage, and yeah, you're asking for an elderly person, someone upper in age, yeah, to sit there for eight hours a day in the heat, yeah, bro. In the heat. And I'm we're feeding, you remember you remember we'd feed them waters constantly, cater raids, food, whatever we can give them. It's a lot. They're in they're in football gear pretty much, bro.

SPEAKER_02

All day long, yeah. Yeah, with the pad and everything with the face mask.

SPEAKER_00

They're they're catchers with the uniform over, you know, and uh yeah, you know, props to them, but they need help, you know, and they get you know, all the years get to them, you know. It's so many parents and the issues, and you know, they hear about their ears are right there behind home plate, yeah, you know, so they hear everything you're saying.

SPEAKER_02

You gotta give them props too for just putting up with everything, putting it up, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know, so just bringing in some backup for them, yeah. And the fact that they're young, man, because you're watching the older umpires, yeah, teaching these younger umpires how to do it.

SPEAKER_02

That's not it's a blessing.

SPEAKER_00

And this is kind of with the coaching thing, right? I I'm teaching my kids like, hey, this is a great thing to do. Like, I hope when you're done with school and you start your careers, you get involved, get involved, coach. You know the game, you can do this. My son will do football, right? Baseball, my daughter will do softball. And I God, I hope she comes and coaches with me. Or my son. Oh, she'd be a great coach. Dude, phenomenal. Yeah. You know, and uh again, it just takes someone to step up. You know, we're all busy, we all have something to do, but if you think you can do it better, step up because I don't want to hear you telling me after the fact. Yeah. How many times that happened, bro? Where you go, uh coach, I have I have a suggestion. Your suggestion was on sign up day.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

That was your suggestion. You didn't sign up, so no suggestions, no thank you. I have a job to do, right? And just trust the process.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And a lot of kids are gonna hate that that phrase. Trust the process. They're gonna hate it. Yeah. And I hear it being preached by really good coaches. And uh it's true because to get better at a sport or at life, it's a process. You're gonna go through some training, and you're gonna fail. Yeah, and you're gonna fall, and you're gonna look stupid sometimes. But guess what? You're learning, yeah, you're gonna get better, you're gonna apply it, and then next thing you know what you're doing. Yeah, dominating, you're dominating, bro.

SPEAKER_02

And softball's a game of failure.

SPEAKER_00

Failure doesn't matter, dude. Yeah, any sport I've ever coached, failure was one of the number one things. Yeah, you have to fail to know what it feels like to succeed. You know, that's something I taught my daughter before we started being winners. Yeah, you know, we played some fantastic teams, and so you're not gonna win them all, bro. No, you know, you're not gonna win them all. And I told her, you gotta learn how to lose. You gotta learn how to suck that that failure up so when you win, you know what that other team's feeling. Exactly. You don't shove it in their face, you go shake their hand, you tell them great game.

SPEAKER_02

You gotta stay humble.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, stay humble because that could be you next year. Yeah, that could be you tomorrow. Absolutely. You know what I mean? So just stay humble, have integrity, understand what that person's going through, and just try to just be a community, bro. You know, there you go. Let's be a community.

SPEAKER_02

Um, and before we go here, uh Jeremy, one last thing. Yo, what's the message you like to leave everyone here?

SPEAKER_00

Never give up on yourself, bro.

SPEAKER_02

Beautiful.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, never, never, no matter how low you are, no matter the circumstances. There might be a death, a horrible breakup, or a divorce, or there might be uh a fight, whatever it might be. Never quit. Never give up on yourself because God is good. Absolutely, and God has never created a human without a big enough boat to be able to get over any wave thrown at you. So just ride the tide, wait for those calm seas, breathe, stay calm, stay the fuck out of your head. Man, that was beautiful. Well said, brother. Well said. Thank you.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, I just want to thank you once again for taking the time to come out here. Um, I hope to have you again anytime uh on another episode down the road. You're like family dog anytime. Yeah, same here. I I feel the same way. Um, and um, you know, I can't thank you enough. You are once again, I'm gonna say you are genuinely one of the good guys, one of the best people that I've met that I've been around. Um, and just once again, thank you for the opportunity to uh uh for allowing me to be part of your staff a year ago, and I'm hoping one day to get back out there with you guys.

SPEAKER_00

I'll take you on immediately. Yeah, and I appreciate it. You're that good.

SPEAKER_02

You're that good.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you so much, and honestly, thank you. Like, this is an honor. This is an honor.

SPEAKER_02

Oh man, it's been a pleasure, it's been a pleasure having you. This is cool, man. Thank you. Yeah, so we'll we'll get you back here, Jeremy. All right, cool. I'll get I'll have those die cokes for you next time. All right, brother. Let's go.

SPEAKER_00

Let's get it, get it.

SPEAKER_02

All right, brother. Thanks a lot, man. Appreciate you.
